The Edmonton area is one of the most fabulous places in Canada for shopping, at least in terms of size. The world's largest shopping mall is located here and shoppers can spend hours and even days happily wandering past the brightly lighted and attractive store displays.


West Edmonton Mall contains over 800 shops and 100 eating places and 9 world class entertainment activities. It is the number one tourist attraction in Alberta and covers the equivalent of 48 city blocks on the west side of Edmonton. There are so many things to see and do at the West Edmonton Mall that some people never bother shopping there, they just go for the entertainment features.


Galaxyland, associated with the mall since 1985 is the world's largest indoor amusement park. There are 26 full-sized rides for thrill seekers of all ages, including the Galaxy Orbiter and singular roller coaster ride that never repeats. Teens are invited to Rock 'N Ride Dance parties each school year at the Mall where from 8 to midnight, teens can get unlimited rides, watch two giant video screens and have all the danceable music anyone could ask for.


An ice rink, live performing sea lions in their own enclosure and miniature golf are just a few of the other attractions that bring people in by the thousands daily. People can enjoy window shopping Canada style and feel quite invigorated by it afterward.


Your shopping experience at West Edmonton Mall couldn't be better. There are shops for swinging seniors as well as for toddling tykes and each one is made to feel unique no matter what body size you are. Merchandise from all over the world is found in the anchor stores as well as the specialty shops that make mall shopping so interesting.


And the food experience here could keep a gourmet satisfied for months to come. There are the usual ethnic cuisines and of course fast food places, but there are some unusual experiences in food shopping as well. For example, there is health food and an Asian Market located on the theme street known as Chinatown. Two other major theme streets are found at the mall--Europa Boulevard fashioned after major European cities; and Bourbon Street, that will make you think you are entering old New Orleans.


If you decide to make a vacation out of the mall, you can choose to stay at one of the luxury hotels located at the mall and in many other locations around the city. For those who like to shop, it's the ideal vacation.

I love the flexibility that comes with working from home. I love the fact that I can define my own hours. There are however some disadvantages of working from home. One of the most common problem people working from home face is ‘loneliness’. Here are my tips to overcome loneliness when working from home:


Keep In Touch: These days with ‘Twitter’, Instant Messaging and Skype you can be in touch with your friends online anytime. Having online friends with similar interests keeps you accountable and motivated. However try to not to spend too much time chatting. If a friend is in a mood for a long chat during business hours you have to be up front and tell them that you will have to get back to them later. For me just knowing that I have a network that I can rely on is good enough. Just that feeling that you are not alone is sometimes enough not to make you feel lonely.


Forums: Forums serve a dual purpose. They are an excellent means of getting the word about your business and they also allow you to keep in touch with other business friends. Again don’t spend too much time on forums. Don’t expect to find all your customers on the forums.


Podcasts: I am addicted to podcasts. I love listening to podcasts. There are heaps of podcasts on the internet and the number is growing every day. I prefer business oriented podcasts.


Take a walk: When you are working from home it’s quite easy to get chained to your desk. There are no water coolers to take your mind away from work. There are no colleagues across the desk to chat about the latest movie releases. So you need to come up with something that can take your mind away from work for some time. I normally walk to the park with my son mid morning. I love it because I come back all reinvigorated and my son is exhausted.


Move to different location: I sometimes get quite bored of my home office. When this happens I take my laptop with me to a different location. I am either off to the library or to the local café or my garden. And of course working on the bed and watching a movie on the cable is always tempting and I have a fallen a victim to this trap many times.

The best way to keep customers is to not have any. If you don’t have customers you can’t loose them. I know you are thinking and may even be saying aloud that this guy is a complete nut. Just how stupid can you be and still write or maybe someone is writing this for him.


Let me clarify what I mean by not having customers. Most people would classify a customer as someone who buys a product or service from you. If you see people who buy your products and services as simply potential buyers of things then you are completely missing the boat.


What you should see from people who purchase from you are potential clients. Clients are people with whom you build a long term relationship by determining their needs and goals and finding a way to fulfill those needs and goals. This does not mean selling them the sizzle instead of the steak or any other form of selling them something that does not take them in the direction of their goals.


This does mean finding out everything you can about your potential clients needs and goals. Who are they, what is their family life like, what is their troubles and how can you help them to alleviate the trouble and reach their goal?


Make sure you qualify your potential clients to assure your products and services are right for them and they are right for you. If your product or service is not right for them or they are not right for you do not be adverse to saying “Sorry, I can’t help you.” The first way you build a client relationship is to assess your potential clients needs and if you and they are a fit. Once you see they do fit then you are well on your way to building a lasting relationship.


In a buy sell relationship you have people trying to sell you something all the time. Every time you hear from them it is to sell you something. I don’t know about you but I really get tired of this type of relationship. I like to believe the person on the other end of the sales pitch has my interest at heart even when I know that isn’t true.


When we are talking about selling on the internet, sales pitches are getting ridiculous. I have been on people’s list where I get a sales letter from them every day and sometime the same sales letter more than once. These people may care about the quality of their products but they care very little about a relationship with their customers. What they do care about is a sale and a profit.


What they fail to realize is that what they get in profits by making these types of sales could actually be increased many times over by creating a real client relationship. The trouble is that this client relationship is too much trouble to create.


I know you have heard of Joe Girard, the famous car salesman who sold more cars than anyone else ever has. He built his entire business by sending thank you cards. In fact, he sent so many, he employed 3 full time staff members to send them out for him. He sent out thousands of cards every month and on the front of the card he said “I like you”.


If this worked for him then there is absolutely no reason to believe it will not work for you. Just imagine that over the course of the year you spent $10 on sending cards to one family. If you got just one referral from that family you would make enough profits to send them cards for years. If you get several over the course of several years you would build a referral business like you have never imagined.


Think about it for just a minute. What would your business and profit ratio be like if you increased you sales in the next year by just 20% . Would that be worth sending out a few hundred cards.

How would you like to have prospective clients call YOU? How would you like to stop chasing business and sit back and let the phone ring? Most of us would love that luxury. And after years in a particular business, many of us get to that point. But it’s a struggle and many others never quite get there. The trick is to become a recognized expert in your field, to establish a name for yourself that is associated with expertise in your business. The trick is to become so well known in your field that prospective clients seek you out and never even compare you with your competition.


You already know the recognized experts in your field. You know who they are. And in many cases, their achievements appear out of reach. Their business reality is so different than our own that it seems almost out of reach. Well, that is not case. Although these recognized experts seem to have a certain degree of star power, they are human beings just like you and me and they got to their level of recognition by following a strategy, by doing certain things deliberately to achieve the desired results.


So the question really is: what did they do? What were the steps along the way and exactly what did they do to achieve the exposure they now enjoy. Believe me; it’s not an easy path. Yes, in some cases, people almost stumble into their own success. Those stories exist and we’ve all heard them. But there are many more than take the hard road and literally muscle their way onto the stage. This article will look at the conceptual foundation of that process.


The first thing you’ll need to become a recognized expert in your field is expertise. There’s no way to fake this. And as an author myself, I’m certainly not encouraging any sort of deceptive run into stardom. If you have ambitions to become a recognized expert in your field, you absolutely must become an expert first. And with the internet close at hand, doing so is easier than ever.


There’s no question that the best value for your money in terms of acquiring expertise is in published books. Do a search on Amazon and you’ll quickly find more knowledge than you can handle. And for those of you who don’t like to read, you can often buy the books in audio format. In fact, you can do a search on iTunes and YouTube and probably find dozens of free podcasts or videos on your topic. And of course, a Google search will bring up all the resources you need.


The second thing you need to do is give your expertise away for free. Yes, you read that right. Give it away for free. Make yourself useful. Get out there and demonstrate your expertise. Show the world your knowledge. And the internet plays a major role in that as well. No longer do you need to publish a book to demonstrate your expertise. Now, you can publish articles like this one or start a podcast series. You can contribute to blogs or forums or you can start a blog of your own. All of these tactics will position you as an expert in your field. All of these things will increase your credibility and your exposure.


Now, the idea of publishing a book is another great option. And that’s a lot easier than it once was as well. No longer do you have to submit a proposal to the industry heavies like Penguin and Random House and pray you get accepted when thousands of others get denied. No. Now, you can find a smaller independent publisher or self-publish your own book. And regardless how you get it out there, you will make the transition from a regular runt to an author. And from that day forward, people will treat you differently. They will treat you like an expert.


The last thing you need to do is leverage the early exposure you get to widen your audience. After you’ve contributed to blogs and forums, after you’ve found an audience by podcasting, after you’ve sold 100 copies of your new book, you need to immediately put those victories into your bio and use them to position yourself for larger and larger venues. Done properly, the process can snowball and lead you on a steep climb to success.


The recognized experts in your field aren’t that different than you and I. They’re just a few steps in front of us. And just because their reality looks so different than yours, don’t think the same reality isn’t equally available to you. It is. You just have to map out a strategy and follow through with it. You have to develop expertise and then give it away for free. And then you have to leverage the early exposure to widen the audience. Good luck!

We’re not going to discuss problem solving tools and techniques. Many forests have died giving their life to supply the thousands of pages written about problem solving techniques. If you are interested in that topic, search the internet or log on to
Amazon.com. You will find hundreds of articles, books, and seminars on the topic of how to solve problems.


No, today we are going to explore a much rarer and more important problem solving issue: how to choose the right problem to solve. It’s not as easy as you think.


A very dear, brilliant friend of mine, a retired professor from the University of Kansas’ School of Business, spent over 30 years studying how businesses and non-profit organizations improve themselves. His research revealed a startling fact:


Managers rarely choose the right problem to solve!


More often than not, the management teams he researched actually came up with great solutions to the problems they worked on. Unfortunately, those problems had no bearing on the overall performance of their companies.


Solving problems that aren’t the biggest hurdle to your business’ success, no matter how well you solve those problems, is not going to produce the improvements you seek.


If the problem you solve doesn’t have leverage, you are wasting time, energy, and money. Worse yet, when you put a lot of effort into solving a problem and it doesn’t improve your situation, you naturally assume that you came up with the wrong solution. So, you go back and try to solve the problem again. You may keep wasting time, energy, and money on that very same problem because you will be convinced that you are solving it wrong.


If you had chosen the right problem to solve, one that has leverage on your business’ performance, even a less-than-perfect solution would have had positive impact. You would have concluded you had come up with a great solution because: look at those great results! Time to move on to the next most important problem.


But how do you know which problems have leverage?


To give you some idea of how difficult picking the right problem can be, Ken identified 29 different processes that control how well a business performs. The leverage of each of the 29 differs for every company and situation. You’ve got to pick the right one to fix.


Here’s a little search tip. Look closely at the problems that you have been avoiding. The ones you haven’t been working on because you really don’t want to face them. The big bad monsters hiding in your closet.


You can just about bet that one of them will be the one you need to work on the most. It will be the one that has the most leverage on your company’s financial improvement. (For most contractors, that biggest and baddest monster hiding in the closet is the distaste for selling.)

I narrowed down the vast pool of mistakes contractors make to the set that has proven to be the most common and threatening. I wrote the report to help you identify the mistakes that get contractors in serious financial trouble.

The Humble Filing Cabinet

Picture the scene: in the land of the efficient office, where hole punches and paper clips roam freely and packs of copier paper gather at dusk with their cousins, the notebook. Where window envelopes and erasers recline in the shadows of the desk draw, ink jet and toner cartridges resting lazily along side spare pens and pencils on the high shelves of the stationery cupboard, sticky notes attached to monitors fluttering gently in the breeze. In this most harmonious of environments there is only one boss, one ruler, one king.

The master of all it surveys, the greatest, the indisputable champion of offices and office equipment the world over. All hail the filing cabinet.

Originating from humble beginnings out of Cincinnati in the USA the filling cabinet quickly established its world-class credentials after an impressive debut in 1898. Since that time it has taken on all-comers, and despite predictions by many that the filing cabinet would finally meet its comeuppance, especially in the head to head death match with the much fancied paperless office, the filing cabinet remains today, undefeated, standing tall and proud in millions of homes and offices across the planet. It’s hugely useful, highly appreciated, revered and respected by its loyal and devout fan-base.

So what's the story? What are the qualities that have propelled the filing cabinet to it stellar status and left the paperless office trailing in its wake, a mere also ran, nothing more than a weak-wristed lightweight, punching above its paperless weight?

The simple answer is brutal simplicity. In truth though, there is far more to the success of the filing cabinet than that.

Edwin G. Seibels invented the original vertical filing system in 1898. At the time, probably best known for his affair with an acrobat from a traveling circus Seibels went on to revolutionise the world of record-keeping. In one fell swoop he instantly removed the necessity to store documents in pigeonholes and have to fold and unfold them. Paper could now be stored in large envelopes standing on end vertically in a drawer. Prototyped by The Globe–Wernicke Company of Cincinnati and consisting of five wooden filing boxes, the filing cabinet as we know and love it today was born!

Such was the success of the concept that in 1938, Globe–Wernicke presented Seibels with a bronze plaque inscribed with the accolade: "Business throughout the world has been helped by this idea and on it is founded an industry that provides employment for many men and women." Starting your own business can also be stressful and highly challenging. Each opportunity to do your own thing, each decision you need to take deserves proper consideration, organisation and planning. Your future depends on it. Before you get going you absolutely must prepare and plan. Though not guaranteed to bring you success carefully preparation will certainly help you on your way and reduce the chances of your new business falling by the wayside.

Act in haste repent in leisure, as they say, so plan, plan and plan again. All too often, people rush into starting their new business without being properly ready. Maybe they're just so fed up working for another company, maybe they're a little over excited about doing their own thing. Either way, without proper preparation your business may be doomed from day one. What do we mean by preparation?

Well firstly an awareness of the financial realities involved in running a business. Know clearly that it can take months or years to make a profit. You must have sufficient funds to enable you business to operate. Save up as much money as possible, including your living expenses for the first year, or even two before you launch. Even if you land plenty of business straight away and your customers pay you on time, (not a given in this day and age) you will want to invest most of that money back in the business to build on your initial success. Investing in additional space, equipment, advertising, staff, technology, stock and insurance needs cash. The problem with starting your business on credit cards or with big loans is that you're limited in the amount of quick reinvestment you are able to make, as you will need your profits to repay loans. If things don't go as well as you'd hoped then lenders are likely to start getting nervous and look at calling in loans or refuse to renew them. This could leave you with cash flow problems.

Research also plays a major role in determining you likely success or failure. Without a clear understanding of the industry you are entering and by failing to identify you target customer you severely compromise your chances of success.

Take the time and the trouble to assess the trends in your industry. What aspects are growing, what are declining? Take your business concept, your idea and conduct a full and thorough SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.) Where can you position your new business in the industry to maximize your chances of success? Does your industry even have a future? What's the prognosis in light of the radical global changes we see today? What about new technologies? Do they offer you the chance to differentiate your proposition? Does technology even threaten the very existence of your industry? Radio 4 ran a comedy sketch interviewing an old envelope glazer from Chesterfield, an artisan whose handcrafted oak-framed envelope windows were no longer in demand due to modern production methods and the introduction of new plastic or glassine envelope windows. Whilst tongue-in-cheek it, the message was serious. How might technology be impacting on your industry? Look before you leap onto a sinking ship - what's referred to as a "sunset industry".

What about your prospective customers, your target audience? As well as ensuring you have a clear and thorough understanding of your industry it's vital you understand your customers, how they think and what motivates them. How do they buy and where do they buy? You need to get inside their heads. Only research and preparation can enable you to do this.

Failing to act on an idea can paralyze the path to success, so a few Silicon Valley kids decided to start while their still too young to shave.

Three boys, Aryan Taheri, 10, Alec Boyer, 11, and Boyer’s brother Shaun, 13, recently launched Santa Clara-based Calsunergy, a company based on the creation of renewable energy products. The young entrepreneurs hope to sell low-cost, high-efficiency solar panels and win first prize at the California Clean Tech Open competition.

These kids are the embodiment of the pioneering spirit shown by entrepreneurs who throw caution into the wind and act on their ideas. Their can-do attitude at such a young age is remarkable, and there’s little doubt these kids aren’t just going to sit back and see where the world takes them. They are creating their own futures.

The book “How Come That Idiot’s Rich and I’m Not,” highlights how actions like the ones taken by the Silicon Valley trio are necessary on the road to success. It covers several wealth-building topics, including the art of taking action on an idea like the eco-friendly start-up created by the California boys.

Moving Tips from the Experts

Transporting your family members thousands of miles can be an overwhelming task that requires more planning than just a move across town. Some tips on how to make the trek easier are listed below.

Pack a separate suitcase or tote for each person if there is room in your vehicle. A complete set of clothes, with underwear and socks, for each travel day, plus an extra set, needs to be included. To avoid bedtime hysterics, pack the things that people need to go to sleep, like special teddy bears or blankets, on top. Keep soiled clothing separate by utilizing garbage bags with pull string enclosures.

Remember to refill any prescription medications before the big day, and pack a first aid kit that includes pain-killers, band-aids, and antibiotic ointment. If anyone has food or other allergies and has been prescribed Benadryl or an EpiPen, remember to have them close at hand in the car.

Go to the local dollar store. Buy a toiletry kit with multiple toothbrushes, lotion, shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, napkins, plastic dinnerware including plates, and finally, many packages of batteries for electronic entertainment devices. Fasten the bags securely and pack them in one of the suitcases that you'll be taking on the trip.

Many families own two vehicles, and they will be driving them separately. In this case, the purchase of two quality walkie-talkies is recommended for the trip. Cell phones are often at the mercy of areas with poor or no reception, and these areas are frequently found along less traveled roads. Plus, the walkie-talkies may pay for themselves by reducing the roaming charges on your cell phone. If car trouble or some other calamity occurs, you can instantly be in contact with the other driver. Consider two identical sets of walkie-talkies, set on the same frequency, for the times when the older children are allowed to attend the rest room or get snacks by themselves. In the event that danger is encountered, your child should be taught to cry for help and push the button at the same time. You may even want to do some practice drills prior to the trip.

Keep an agenda of everyday tasks, like taking vitamins and medicine, recharging the cell phones and walkie-talkies, and double checking to make sure you've gotten everything. Make a space for you to check off after each task has been completed. You are more than likely to become exhausted on an extended road trip and may not be able to recall all of the small details that can make a huge difference.

It is better to charge your batteries for the communication devices every night, because normally, the day after the night you don't charge it will be the day you will need it the most. To make things easier, go ahead and make a copy of this list for each day and store it in a three ring binder, along with printouts of Mapquest directions and the phone numbers of your important contacts, such as the moving company and the hotels in which you intend to stay.

You'll obviously want to pack snacks for the car ride. Consider healthier snacks such as protein bars and shakes, as opposed to sodas and candy bars. Traveling with kids on sugar highs is a bad idea.

What to Expect When Entering Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy, often referred to as radiotherapy, has many uses. While it is useful for the treatment of non-malignant conditions such as thyroid eye disease, it is most commonly used as the result of a cancer diagnosis and as part of a treatment regiment to control malignant tumors.

When used to treat cancer, radiation therapy is often administered in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy. In operable cases, surgery may be conducted to remove as much of the cancer as possible, then treatment is followed up by radiation therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. The same is true of treatment in conjunction with chemotherapy. In some cases, a combination of all three treatments will be used.

To treat a person with radiation therapy, a doctor known as a radiation oncologist directs high energy x-rays at the patient’s body in order to kill cancer cells and prevent their growth and proliferation. These x-rays are the same as those administered to image bones and teeth, and just like an x-ray of your arm or teeth, it is not painful. However, the concentration of x-rays is much higher as its purpose is to kill living cells rather than just obtain an image.

At such high doses, the x-rays are capable of killing not just the cancerous cells, but health tissue as well. Radiation therapy works, however, because healthy cells that are damaged are better able to recover whereas cancerous cells have a more difficult time. To minimize damage to healthy cells, the radiation is targeted to the part of the body where the cancer resides.

Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, decreased immune response, hair loss, and others. Side effects often result from the radiation of healthy tissue. However, new technologies are increasing the precision of radiation therapy, thereby reducing side effects and improving success rates.
